EVENING STANDARD MEDIA DIVERSITY SCHEME

The Worshipful  Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers has been a partner with the Evening Standard and The Independent since the publishing group began its Editorial Diversity Bursary Apprenticeship Scheme in 2013..

The apprenticeship scheme runs in conjunction with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), and is open to those who have not been to university. Since launch, trainees have successfully completed their apprenticeships which includes day-release courses/or a 20-week fast track course with the  NCTJ, and on-the-job training.

The trainees work alongside senior journalists at the Evening Standard and The Independent across all aspects – news, arts, entertainment, sport, comment - of editorial both in print and digital. Those supported by the Stationers have taken part in events at Stationers’ Hall including debates held in association with the London Press Club and Society of Editors. They have also taken part in the annual careers symposium focussing on apprenticeships, which has been organised by the Stationers' Company.

Doug Wills, who is a Court Assistant with the Stationers and Editor Emeritus of the Evening Standard, says: “The involvement of partners such as the Stationers has been one of the strengths of the scheme. It allows the trainees to be involved in a range of activities outside of their daily duties and provides a network of contacts and support. It is a winning combination.”

All of the apprentices who have taken part in the scheme successfully completed their training receiving journalism diplomas from the NCTJ. Some of them have been nominated for national awards.
